How does payment work?
When filling out paperwork prior to your first session, we will ask you for a credit, debit, or HSA/FSA card to be kept on file. It will be secured in our HIPAA compliant electronic health record and at the end of each session, your card will be billed for the agreed upon session fee. Privacy will be maintained via billing and will be billed as “Blue Pines”.
Why Private (Self) Pay?
Careful consideration is to be made when deciding whether or not to use insurance. We understand everyone’s circumstances are different and respect your decisions regarding your healthcare and wellness investments. At Blue Pines Counseling we value the private pay model for numerous professional reasons.
Provides increased client privacy-insurance companies require a diagnosis and can request client case notes. Some diagnoses can limit your access to life insurance and your ability to safeguard your future. A diagnosis can also be very beneficial in some cases and provide access to necessary care. If together we decide this is in your best interest, we are happy to provide you with a diagnosis if applicable.
Provides increased client autonomy-insurance companies can limit the number of sessions, the type of therapy, and which therapist you can work with. For example, while art therapists are nationally credentialed professionals, holding master’s degrees in human psychology and development, in the state of Wisconsin, their services are not covered by insurance.
Provides decreased stigma and increased community wellness-we don’t believe in order for people to benefit from therapy that there needs to be anything “wrong” with a person. Insurance requires a person be diagnosed with a mental health disorder in order to be reimbursed for therapy sessions. Therapy can help us know and understand ourselves, and there are tremendous benefits in knowing oneself well. When we know ourselves well, we become less reactive and more responsive to our environments, which in turn, benefits everyone we come in contact with.
Provides increased provider performance-therapists in private practice typically do not “work” 40 hour weeks. Can you imagine being one of 40 people your therapist works with each week? Our time spent in session with you is considered face-to-face time. The time we spend outside of session maintaining ethical standards of care, consulting, conceptualizing and caring for ourselves is never considered in insurance reimbursement rates and does not reflect the quality of life required for a therapist to provide quality care.
What if I decide to use insurance?
While we do not take insurance, it is still possible to have a portion of your services paid for through your out-of-network outpatient mental health benefits. If requested, we are happy to support you in getting reimbursement from your insurance company by providing you with a Superbill.
A Superbill is a specialized invoice, which includes the procedure coding, diagnosis coding, and session dates your insurance carrier will need in order to reimburse you or contribute to your deductible. You can begin by calling your insurance company, in advance, to see if they cover out-of-network providers and how they want Superbills submitted.
You can also choose to utilize, Thrizer, a third party company we have partnered with to check your benefits, submit Superbills, and get reimbursed.
